So you want a yummy, cozy drink, but you’ve already had your daily dose of coffee? Or maybe you’re—gasp!—not a coffee drinker? We have just what you need: a tea latte

Like their more famous cafe cousin the coffee latte, tea lattes are made by mixing tea with steamed or frothed milk for a creamy beverage that will make you want to curl up with a good book and your favorite blanket. Unlike the coffee variety, though, there are almost endless ways to prepare tea lattes to suit your tastes. Let’s go through the basics of how to make a tea latte, plus some of our favorite recipes.

How to Make a Tea Latte from Scratch

  1. Choose your tea. The great thing about tea lattes is that you can make such a variety. Chai tea lattes, matcha green tea lattes, fruity herbal lattes, chamomile lattes, oolong lattes, rooibos lattes—whatever your heart desires.
  1. Brew a strong cup of tea. Use less water than normal, and steep the tea for longer, or use more tea leaves. Play around with what works best for the type of tea you selected.
  1. If desired, sweeten the tea with the sweetener of your choice. (We like monk fruit as an alternative to sugar.)
  1. Steam your milk, or gently heat it in a saucepan and froth it using a frother, mini-whisk, or immersion blender. Pour it over the tea in about a 1:1 ratio. Now sip and savor.

And yes, you can make iced tea lattes as well! Brew extra-strong tea, sweeten it, then let it cool a bit before pouring it over ice (remember the ice will melt and dilute it somewhat). Top with frothed milk and stir to blend.

Here’s a hot tip, though: You don’t have to make tea lattes from scratch. You can also use Primal Kitchen’s Latte Drink Mixes with Collagen. Get more bang for your latte buck with the addition of collagen peptides for skin, hair, and nail support!
