This copycat version of a popular burger chain’s saucy fries is made with Primal Kitchen Special Sauce—no artificial sweeteners, seed oils, or drive-thru regret. In addition to the grilled onions and cheese, we topped our crispy fries with beef for a carnivore’s dream snack or side dish.
Ingredients
- 1 28 oz. package of frozen french fries (we used Alexia)
- ½ lb ground beef
- Salt and pepper, to taste
-
Primal Kitchen Avocado Oil
- ½ small onion, diced
- 4 slices of American cheese
-
Primal Kitchen Special Sauce, for drizzling
Directions
Make the fries: Preheat oven to 425°F. Place fries in a single layer on a baking sheet. Cook for 18-20 minutes, flipping once halfway through cooking. (Note: If not using Alexia fries, follow the instructions on the package.)
Cook the beef: In the meantime, heat a griddle or pan to medium-high. Add ground beef and smash it flat. Season with salt and pepper. Use a spatula to break the beef up into sections (or crumbles, if preferred). Cook for 3-5 minutes per side, flipping halfway.
Caramelize your onions: Dice the onion into small pieces. Add to the heated grill with a little avocado oil and stir frequently until the onions turn clear. Continue browning a bit longer until fully caramelized.
Assemble: Once the fries are done cooking, top with the ground beef. Add cheese slices in a single layer. Spoon onions over the top. Drizzle with Primal Kitchen Special Sauce and serve. Enjoy!

If you’ve ever been lured in by those crispy, saucy, cheesy fries on the “secret menu” of a certain burger chain, you’re not alone. Made with sliced cheese, onions, and a tangy sauce reminiscent of Thousand Island, minds were blown when word of this underground sensation got out.
Smothered french fries are undeniably delicious, but drive-thru fries can be packed with ingredients you might not be too thrilled about having on the menu. That’s why we created this easy DIY version with our tangy, savory Special Sauce. Made with real ingredients and no seed oils or artificial sweeteners, it marries all the flavors of your favorite burger toppings (ketchup, relish, and mustard) into one glorious bite. We also added beef to our not-so-secret loaded french fries recipe for extra protein and a Primal twist.
